Research continues to show that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can offer relief for a wide array of conditions in ways traditional medical methods can’t. From wound healing and psoriasis to Lyme disease, fibromyalgia and traumatic brain injury, many medical studies have concluded that HBOT 100% oxygen treatment is a highly effective way to stimulate the natural healing process.

The number of treatments that’s right for you will depend on your unique situation, and the condition being treated. Generally, though, anyone who needs oxygen treatment should consider committing to at least a couple of sessions per week as a bare minimum. Many patients see great results with one treatment per day for five days, up to 20-40 treatments total. Each session is usually 90 minutes to a little over two hours.

Let’s take a more detailed look at a few popular conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and some clinical studies and their results.

HBOT for Wound Care

The fact is that wounds need oxygen to heal. Normally, oxygen is simply delivered to wounds through your blood. In an HBOT, though, your body is fed 100% oxygen at a pressure that is greater than normal, allowing it to extend beyond the reach of your arteries, stimulating mitochondria, and empowering your body’s cells to accelerate wound healing.

A 2014 clinical study, 40 patients with complex wounds received HBOT treatment delivered with 100% oxygen for 90 minutes. The results were outstanding. More than 75% of patients with complex wounds healed after their completion of a series of HBOT treatments (given five days per week). After only five HBOT treatments, wound size reduced by an average of 29.7 percent.

HBOT for Fibromyalgia

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment has been shown again and again as a very promising option for chronic pain, especially fibromyalgia. Chronic pain is pain that remains in the nervous system for an extended period, affecting not only a person’s physical well-being, but very often their emotional health as well. HBOT for Fibromyalgia has seen success in some recent scientific studies.

A 2015 clinical trial evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on symptoms and brain activity in patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome. Patients received 40 sessions of HBOT treatment, 5 days/week, for 90 minutes, with 100% oxygen. The results of the study provided evidence that HBOT can improve the symptoms and life quality of patients with Fibromyalgia. Additionally, it showed that HBOT can induce neuroplasticity and significantly rectify abnormal brain activity in pain related areas of Fibromyalgia patients.

HBOT for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory and immunological cutaneous disease. The high morbidity in patients with psoriasis results from severe clinical manifestations and/or adverse effects of treatment.

In a 2009 study, two patients with a long history of psoriasis vulgaris were treated with HBOT. The first patient underwent treatment for 60 minutes, once per day for five days per week, for a total of eight sessions. The result was a significant amount of amelioration of symptoms, with most lesions cleared and a marked reduction in itching and scaling. An 18-month follow up revealed the patient had only mild skin symptoms.

The second patient underwent HBOT treatment for psoriasis for 90 minutes once per day for five days. After six sessions, his erythema, scaling and itching were reduced in severity greatly, and after 15 sessions he had improved even more.

The Final Word

As mentioned earlier, HBOT treatment length and success can vary depending on the condition and its severity. However, these studies, and many more, cannot be ignored, as hyperbaric oxygen treatment continues prove to be a promising treatment option for many conditions where standard medical treatment falls short.
